Altavia 1 – day 2

Day 2: From Rifugio Scotoni to Rifugio Città di Fiume

3 ago 2015

Imagine waking up in a room that’s all wood and looks like something out of a fairy tale, going down for a breakfast of black bread, butter, jam and fresh and wholesome homemade products. Imagine setting out before sunrise when there is still a nip in the air, along a path heavy with the night’s dew. Imagine going past mountains, through woods, climbing peaks, walking along lakesides until you get to the next refuge, tired but happy, thinking back over the places you’ve seen and what the next day has in store for you.

Climb to Lagazuoi

We reach the Rifugio Lagazuoi, get our stamp and as we make our way down from the pass we are just blown away by the breath-taking Val Travenanzes with its red rock that lies before us. Wherever you look, there is something spectacular to immortalise.

We walk near the famous Cinque Torri and after Rifugio Scoiattoli we take a path towards to Passo Giau.

We leave the more touristy and busy sections of the Altavia No. 1 behind us and for the rest of the day we don’t see a soul. We cross the Mondeval plateau with its majestic rock face and the hut where the grave of a Stone Age hunter who lived around 7500 years ago was discovered. The skeleton dating back to prehistoric times is preserved in the museum in Selva di Cadore, along with other artefacts found in the area.

We’re behind schedule again today and the trail just goes on and on … Is someone moving the refuges further and further away?!
Then, from above, we finally glimpse something glistening in the distance, a mirage! It’s the roof of the Rifugio Città di Fiume!
At long last we sit down for dinner overlooking Mount Pelmo.
