From Lago di Braies to Belluno in 5 days
A long route through the Dolomites
Our blog begins at the end of this amazing adventure, as we look over our photos and are immediately transported back there. It’s hard to believe we walked 150 km through the mountains, through landscapes that appear to have been forgotten by man. Every so often we came across someone but, to tell you the truth, it was the many marmots, chamois and cows that kept us company along the way.
Real Heidi-style holidays!
OK, so we’re not your typical kind of girls. Some girls can’t wait to spend August at the beach, while others get their kicks from walking uphill for hours and hours to reach their destination, without worrying about their hair and make-up, in the sun and rain, perching on a rock for a quick lunch and to drink in unbeatable views.
This is our idea of happiness! Take our word for it, it’s not that bad…
We decide to follow the Altavia No. 1, the first and most famous walking trail in the Dolomites.
Mapped out in 1966, the Altavia No. 1 starts in Val Pusteria and goes through the Ladin area of Val Badia and the Ampezzo and Alto Agordino valleys, as well as the Veneto Alpine valleys of Zoldo, Agordino and Belluno. These places are all very different, from the local people to the nature you can find there.
Our journey was to take us to some of the most beautiful spots in the Dolomites, with their breath-taking scenery and famous refuges. The guidebooks suggest you do it in 12 stages, taking about 10-12 days.
We decided to do it in 5.
So we wrote out a list of the things we would need, stuffed them into our huge backpacks and, with the help of our worried but resigned parents, set off with 10 kg on our backs.
